How sender ID identity verification works

When you apply for a custom sender ID, the ACMA (Australian Communications and Media Authority) requires the identity of the person registering it to be verified. As an ACMA Certified Provider, Mobile Message can complete this check for you directly, so in most cases you won't need to use myID or ACMA Assist.

The check itself is handled by Stripe Identity, a widely used and secure identity verification service. Mobile Message never sees or stores your ID images. Any images and personal details collected during the check are deleted once verification completes.

When the check happens

After your sender ID application is reviewed, you'll receive an email titled "Important: Complete Your Sender ID Application" containing a Start ID verification link. Your application is not complete until this step is finished. Submitting the application form alone doesn't finalise it.

What you'll need

  • A current Australian driver licence or passport. Expired documents are rejected.
  • A phone with a camera (easiest) or a computer with a webcam.
  • About 5 to 10 minutes.

Getting it right the first time

Most failed checks come down to a few avoidable issues:

  1. Photograph the physical document with your camera. The check needs you to photograph your actual licence or passport during the session. Screenshots, scans, photocopies and existing photos from your camera roll are not accepted.
  2. Use good lighting and avoid glare. Blurry or reflective images can't be read.
  3. The selfie must match the document. You'll be asked to take a quick selfie, which is compared to the photo on your ID. Make sure the same person who owns the document completes the check.
  4. The document must be current. Check the expiry date before you start.

The verification should be completed by an authorised person at your business. If the email went to the wrong person, simply forward it to the right one. Whoever completes the ID check becomes the verified contact for the application, regardless of the name entered on the original form.

If the check fails

You'll receive an email explaining what went wrong, with a link to try again. There's no penalty for retrying. If you believe the outcome is wrong, reply to that email within 24 hours and we'll review the verification manually.

After you're verified

Nothing more is needed from you. Your sender ID is submitted to the national SMS Sender ID Register and activates automatically. See How long until my sender ID is ready to use? for timing.
