Sending SMS Messages with Customer Names

Learn how to personalise SMS messages with customer names using contact fields, tags, and lists in Mobile Message

Updated today

Mobile Message allows you to personalise SMS messages by inserting customer details such as first names into the message content. This helps create more engaging, human messages while still sending at scale.

A video walkthrough is available at the top of this article.

Before you start

To personalise messages with customer names, you need:

  • Contacts imported into Mobile Message

  • Customer names stored in contact fields (for example, First Name)

  • Contacts added to a list

If you haven’t imported contacts yet, import them first so names are available for use in messages.

Selecting recipients from a list

To send a personalised message:

  1. Go to Send Messages

  2. Choose Lists

  3. Select the list containing your customers

  4. Click Add Selected

All contacts in the list will be added as recipients.

Choosing the sender

Next, select the sender for your message. Choose the sender that best fits your message and audience.

Writing a personalised message

To insert a customer’s name into your message, you’ll use tags.

  1. Click in the message content box

  2. Click Add Tags

  3. Select First Name (or another available field)

The tag will be inserted into your message. When the message is sent, each recipient will see their own name in place of the tag.

Example:

  • Message content:
Hi First Name , thanks for being a valued customer.

  • Delivered message:
Hi Sarah, thanks for being a valued customer.

If a contact does not have a value for the selected field, the tag will be left blank for that recipient.

Adding an opt-out link

Marketing messages must give recipients a clear way to opt out.

To add an opt-out option:

  1. Click Insert Opt-out Link

  2. The opt-out text is added to the message automatically

This ensures your message is compliant and allows recipients to unsubscribe easily.

Message length and credits

As you write your message, Mobile Message will show:

  • Character count

  • Number of SMS parts

  • Credits used per recipient

If your message exceeds 160 characters (or uses Unicode characters), it may be sent as multiple SMS parts and use more than one credit per recipient.

This calculation updates in real time so you can adjust the message if needed.

Sending the message

Once everything is ready:

  1. Review your recipients, sender, and message content

  2. Click Send Messages

Messages are sent immediately and delivered instantly in most cases.

Personalised SMS messages are a powerful way to improve engagement while still reaching large groups efficiently.
